Subject: No Flash To Me From: Flash_Sender@Microsoft_Addict Sender: Flash_Sender@Microsoft_Addict I append http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_flash_to_me.txt Hi, Thanks for your reference to a website, but that site was burdened by requiring Flash, so was Not read. Flash requires a browser to install & run proprietary binary code from Adobe who refuse to make their source code public. Flash is thus not trusted as it cannot be inspected. Even though they now also offer a few versions for Linux, & 1 for Solaris, there's still none for BSD http://berklix.com/~jhs/bsd/ or other OSs & one still can't check flash code, or compile for other versions of OSs & CPUs. Flash can run on Linux as a binary), (so also on BSD with Linux emulation), http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/desktop-browsers.html But it would open up the can of worms above, + I have no wish to waste time keeping various computers aligned with compatible releases of flash, emulator, OS, 32/64 & CPU types & tricks, & encapsulating the mess in a security sandbox, just because the Flash vendor refuses to publish sources. So sites that force flash are not read. Free Software: http://www.berklix.com/free/ Consultancy: http://www.berklix.com For Webmasters: http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/std/no_flash_server.txt Extract from http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources/CdNotice 2011_08_23: Some web pages include Flash files that can play only with the non-free program Flash Player. This program is gratis, but it is not free in the sense of freedom, and it contains known features to restrict and track users. It is important not to install that program. The free GNASH player will work for sites that use Flash version 8; if a site uses a later Flash version, contact its operators and urge them politely but firmly to move back to Flash 8 for better compatibility. Or they can advance to HTML5. FreeBSD /usr/ports/graphics/gnash/ Free flash player from FSF FreeBSD /usr/ports/graphics/gnash-devel/ Free flash player from FSF BBC are planning (at 2011-12) to offer HTML-5 but it will take a while yet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/help/7277283.stm#html5
